My teaching philosophy
Piano lessons are a means to an end, and that end is a lifetime of music appreciation and musical sensitivity. My goal in teaching piano lessons is not to turn my students into concert pianists, unless, of course, a student decides that they wish to make that their goal. In my piano lessons, understanding musical concepts is more important than playing lots and lots of repertoire; ear training and musicianship is more important than getting all the notes right; good attitude, work ethic, and an understanding of what motivates the student to practice is more important than a strictly regimented practice and performance routine. For me, piano lessons are primarily about the development of patience, focus, self-confidence, and sensitivity; the music is simply a means to these ends.

Curriculum
For children, I teach from the Alfred series of piano method books – the Prep Course for young beginners (age 5-7) and the Basic Piano Course for slightly older beginners (8 and up). In any given level, we work primarily from the Lesson book, the Solo (Recital) book, the Theory book, and always the Ear Training book. Depending on student interest and ability level, I will supplement the curriculum with additional books from the Alfred series, such as Technic, Notespeller, Composition, and Improvisation.

For my adult students, my curriculum is more flexible. Depending on the student’s interest level, and, more importantly, the amount of time they are able to commit to a practice schedule, we may use method books, or we may proceed with individual pieces selected by both the student and teacher, supplemented by a study of music theory.
